Possible complications of hysterectomy
Hysterectomy is major surgery with well established risks. The good news is that complications are getting less frequent compared to years ago. For instance, a recently published multi-centre randomized trial from the UK found the following complication rates for the different routes of hysterectomy:
| Adbominal versus laparoscopic | Vaginal versus laparoscopic | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Abdominal hysterectomy |
Laparoscopic hysterectomy | Vaginal hysterectomy | Laparoscopic hysterectomy | |
Major haemorrhage TOTAL RATE OF MAJOR COMPLICATIONS |
2.4% 6.2% |
4.6% 11.1% |
2.9% 9.5% |
5.1% 9.8% |
In addition to the above major complications, this study also showed that about 1 in 4 women will experience a minor complication during or after their surgery (e.g. fever, infection, deep vein thrombosis), To some extent, these risks can be reduced by the use of prophylactic antibiotics and anti-coagulants (drugs used to "thin" the blood to make it clot less easily).
